Book Design for Authors
February 6, 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm$175.00
Independent authors have that name for a reason. They’re brave pioneers expressing their creative freedom with all aspects of their books, from writing to designing. However, not every author’s genius work includes design. Writing is the easy part. Many authors have discovered that the road to beautiful book design is fraught with numerous pitfalls and frustration.
The key to book design is having the right tools for the job and knowing how to use them. Microsoft Word will get you by, and those generic covers might be good in a pinch, but if you want to stay ahead of the pack, increase your book sales, and have your book on the shelves next to the likes of Robert Jordan and George R.R. Martin, you have to step up your game big time.
Blue Sun Studio’s Book Design for Authors gives you the helping hand you need. Get expert advice and training from author/designer Deb Dorchak on how to use Adobe Photoshop and InDesign to create books that sell themselves. Time and again, our book design has proven that a professional cover and interior will increase your sales and your credibility as an author.
February 6th & 13th: Photoshop Basics
Parts one and two will focus on Photoshop basics, including sizing your images, working with fonts, masking, and the key differences between a print and digital cover.
February 20th & 27th: InDesign Basics
Parts three and four dive into InDesign basics, setting up your interior file for Create Space or Ingram Spark, working with styles, and proper formatting for print and digital.
Deb’s experience in the old school publishing industry (read: before computers) gives her unique insight when it comes to knowing what works and what doesn’t on the printed page. Additional experience in digital design provides the technical foundation for creating ebooks.
You don’t have to have prior design experience or own the Adobe products to take this course. The tools you learn will transfer over if you choose to use open source programs such as Gimp or Scribus, or earlier versions of Adobe.
Space is limited, only 7 seats available per four week cycle. A waiting list will be available if you miss out this time around and you can pre-register for the next cycle if you miss out on the previous one.
